Stuff Hamish - 4th November 2003
|

Things are hotting up in the race for WESTAs Player of the Year 2003. Nominations are as follows.

Paul Lambert
Christian Dailly
Steven Pressley
Gary Naismith.

Keep the votes coming.

Joe Jordan was on a radio phone in this week and was reflecting on 100 years of Hampden Park. He remembered crowds of 100,00 some great nights and his favourite player Jimmy Johnstone. Asked if he thought we had a chance against the Dutch he said that in his time the lads had been able to raise their game and defeat better opposition. Jings! It is worth noting that 20 odd years ago we were almost invincible at home and apart from England the only defeats were against Northern Ireland, Brazil and Spain in 74, 2 - 1 defeat with a missed penalty. I would consider the one team we beat that could be thought of as superior was the Czech teams of 73 and 77! We were a good team then with really talented players.

Before I start weeping with nostalgia some thoughts on Hampden. Outwith the big games a favourite memory would be the '90 victory 2 - 1 over Romania. Returning from Italia 90 and a travelling support numbering over 20,000 only 12.801 spectators graced the national stadium. Hagi controlled the game until a Tommy Boyd inspired Scotland triumphed preparing the way to the finals in Sweden.

Said radio phone had some hard luck stories concerning folk queing at Safeway stores last night. Where were these people when I was sitting watching us get trounced against Austria? Those worthy of tickets are the non travel club members who attend home games and are not catered for! Not 1 mentioned the ludicrous decision to rebuild a stadium having twice held 149,000 people to a capacity 15,000 lower than Murrayfield, and the same size as St James Park.

Excitement is building for the big game.

** High Priority ** Scottish FA - 16th October 2003
|
The pack containing Home & Away application forms will be mailed to you all first class Wednesday 15 October.

We have had to restrict you to a tight deadline again I'm afraid because of the process and resources available to turnaround both matches in such a short period and to ensure we mail your tickets out in good time.

For the home match each travel member is invited to purchase 2 tickets.

For the away match we will receive approximately 5000 tickets priced at 20 euros (£15) & 27,50 euros (£20) , which are sections 409 - 451 within the Arena Stadium in Amsterdam. Therefore a points criteria will be in place based on one point per member for the last 10 matches.

These are
Korea 16/5/2002
Hong Kong 20-23/5/2002
Faroes 7/9/2002
Iceland 12/10/2002
Portugal 20/11/2002
Germany 17/12/2002
Turkey 25/2/2003
Lithuania 2/4/2003
Norway 20/8/2003
Germany 10/9/2003

We believe this to be a fair review that will hopefully allow a mix of both old and newer members to attend with us in Amsterdam.

I would like to avoid mailing out too many very large batches of tickets mainly from a security point of view, especially with the tension we caused the Easta lot with their 35 tickets for Germany going awol for a while !!!! So if you have reps in Glasgow that could collect tickets that'd be a help alternatively we will try to mail them registered post.

Hope this information helps and we'd be grateful if you could pass the details to your members regarding the points criteria because some newer members will miss out in being confirmed.
It would be great to be able to confirm everyone but just not possible I'm afraid with such overwhelming demand that's being predicted.

Under 21's Hamish - 12th October 2003
|

Nothing beats a big qualifier at Hampden. 30 years ago Scotland beat a mightily impressive Czech team 2 -1 in front of 100,00 fans to qualify for Germany 74. We hadn't been in the finals since 58 and the atmosphere that night was incredible. Hunter the goalie dropped an easy shot and the nerves were jangling. Wee Billy Bremner galvinised the troops and when Big Jim Holton equalised we were set for an amazing 2nd half. Young Joe Jordan a newcomer with Leeds cannoned a header into the net at the Rangers end and we went loopy. Grown men cried and there was an emotional lap of honour. I have always felt that the England game shrank in significance a little that night as we had bigger and more important fish to fry. Foreign trips really started in 74. And anyway England didnnae qualify and we beat them 2 - 0 in May to send them homewards to think again!

Other qualifiers have followed, Annfield, Belfast , Cardiff Hampden and Celtic Park, and now just as important is a chance for Bertie and the lads to show the younger fan what qualifying is all about! The Under 21's need our support too, the future is bright, the future is tartan!
