Sweden - what went wrong?

So what happened in Sweden that caused some WESTA members who couldn't make the trip to end up in a serious discussion at half time about whether or not potatos were used in the creation of macaroon bars? What caused some to claim the highlight of the game was catching a glimpse of a couple of the WESTA girls on the TV, and one WESTA member to have delayed shock and destroy her boyfriends laptop with a glass of wine in the days after the game?

Was it the lack of depth in the squad? was it the lack of playing time (only our 2nd game this year!!!)? Was it that the squad had heard storys about some of the elder members of WESTA still giving it laudy on the dance floor at 3am the night before the game?

Well these did play a part but when you look closely at past results between Scotland & Nordic teams we have a good record winning 36 of 65 encounters, but there are 4 encounters that are significant :

2002 v Denmark L 0-1

2003 v Norway D 0-0

2009 v Norway L 0-4

2010 v Sweden L 0-3

Why are these significant?

Because they are a list of all the games we have played in the Nordic countries in the month of August!!! That is where we went wrong! We should NEVER AGAIN schedule away fixtures against Nordic teams in the month of August. I trust our ATAC rep will be raising this with the SFA at the first possible opportunity

Lithu-bloddy-ania

Well its Euro qualifier time again and that must mean one thing, yes yet another trip to Lithu-bloody-ania!!!

This is the 4th consecutive time we have been drawn in the same Euro group as Lithuania. Our record against them isn't as bad as many seem to think of the 6 games we have won 4 drawn 1 and lost 1. However it is that 1-0 loss (the first time we played them in Kanuas) that people remember combined with over familiarity and also the fact that Lithuania keep sending us back to their equilivent of North Cro....sorry Cumbernauld that many don't look forward to this trip. So if your not all that up for it (or if you are) Click CLICK HERE to relive Christian Dailly's Header and mind a time when Kenny Miller scored regulary for us.

LIECHTENSTEIN

What to say about a country that can fit its entire population into Hampden and still have room for 19,000 of us in as well, uses the tune of God Save the Queen for their national anthem, has the highest ratio of GDP in the world, is the world's largest producer of false teeth and is the only country to have ever lost to San Marino in football?

Footballing wise they are minnows but as we Scot's know all to well minnows aren't always easy to beat. The mahority of their players come form the Vaduz club, who play in the Swiss league and are well known to Falkirk fans as they knocked them out of europe last season

As we have never played them there is no video footage to link to so in recognition of the fact that the Lithuania away game pushes the 2007 France game off the 10 point ladder CLICK HERE for one of the greatest goals on one of the greatest nights in Scotland's history!

Norway Flag v Saltire

Norway v Scotland Preview

12 August 2009, Uluveaal Stadium, Oslo, Norway

History

Norway was first exposed to football in the late 19th century and was an enthusiastic adopter of the sport, however the harsh weather conditions and Norway's adherence to amateurism restricted their growth internationally and they have only qualified for 3 World Cup Finals (1938, 1994 & 1998) getting as far as the 2nd round in 1998 (from Scotland's group!). It is their woman who have greater achievements, winning the Women's World Cup twice.

You boys took one hell of a beating

Norwegian football flourished in the 1990's with a large number of players including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Man Utd), Tore Andre Flo (Chelsea & Rangers) & Stig Inge Bjornebye (Liverpool) moving to England & Scotland. Before this the most famous Norwegian connected with football was commentator Bjorge Lillelien, who could not contain his delight after Norway achieved a historic 2-1 win over England in 1981

Click here to listen to his famous commentary.

Scotland

Scotland have a good record against Norway having won 8 times and only lost twice out of 16 meetings, although Chris Iluwemo would probably agree that we should have 9 wins against them! Our full record against Norway is -

P-16 W-8 D-6 L-2 F-33 A -17

Our last visit to Norway was in 2005 when a brace from Kenny Miller gave us a comfortable win despite Norway pulling back a late goal for a final 2-1 scoreline

Kenny Miller 1st Goal

Kenny Miller 2nd Goal

Norway currently sit bottom of group 9 with 3 points, after drawing 0-0 away to Macedonia and losing 2-0 to Netherlands in June meaning they need to beat Scotland in August to have even a slim chance of finishing 2nd

Football Aid breaks record at Hampden Park

Jen Blackwood, July 2008

See below for an update from Barbara at the Football Aid charity:

Fifty-two football fans have set a new Football Aid record for the most amount of money ever raised from playing two matches on the hallowed turf of Hampden Park.

Over £23,500 was raised by fans from both of the two games, Scotland Vs Scotland, and Scotland Vs the Rest of the World. Each fan paid for the unique chance to pull on the shirt and play in a 90 minute fully officiated charity football match on the 31st May 2008. The match was supported by a host of footballing legends: Scott Booth, Trevor Stevens, Pat Nevin, Alan McLaren and Paul Lambert, and fans had travelled from as far away as the Netherlands to participate in the game.

The all-Scottish game ended with the Away team grabbing an astonishing 11-3 victory, however it was a victory for Scotland in the International Challenge, with the Away team unable to capitalise on their many chances to keep them from losing by 8 goals to 1. International Challenge star, Ross Donald was exceptionally proud of his wonder goal at the national stadium.

He said: “It was a very good experience as always, and the access to the lounge at Hampden definitely improves the whole day.

”I will definitely be back. Taking part in Football Aid is now a regular slot in my diary - and with seven wins out of seven, and 9 or 10 goals, I'm keen to keep up my good record!”

In past years, moneys raised from this event have helped fund projects including Childline, the Children’s Hospice Association and the Highland Perthshire Sports Trust, all of whom were nominated by the SFA and our sponsors, BT Scotland.

Charitable funds generated from the event are distributed through Football Aid’s parent charity Field of Dreams, and split between Diabetes research and management programmes and other highly deserving charitable projects nominated by the SFA and BT Scotland. If you would like further information regarding playing in the event, please visit the Scotland and International Challenge Football Aid pages at www.footballaid.com or contact the sales team at info@footballaid.com.

You all have given your names to Jen and she has booked a place and paid a deposit for you accordingly. If you do not now intend to go, or if there is a change to the numbers in your party, please let Jen know by e-mail to avoid unneccessry cost.

If you have not visited the museum before I certainly recommend it. There is lots to see and it is well laid out.

See you then!

The Tartan Army is heading to Aviemore next June instead of Germany! The event is during the second phase of the world cup which will be beamed live to the tartan army on a giant screen...... the very successful annual football tournament will take place on the Saturday at Aviemore with a fun golf tournament at the new prestigious Spey valley championship course on the Friday! The largest ever gathering of clans since the Jacobite rebellion 360years ago will also stage their own carnival highland games fun event on the Sunday! A major concert will be staged on the Saturday evening.... and a last night ceilidh in the Aviemore Highland Resort on the Sunday evening....... the aviemore highland resort will run a children’s programme over the weekend and it is envisaged that being the start of the Scottish school holidays a proportion of TA visitors and their families will stay on in the Spey valley for several days......
